Pi (π) Day
Pi (π) Day is an unofficial holiday that celebrates the mathematical constant π which is approximately 3.14159. It is celebrated on March 14 in countries that follow the month/day date format because the digits in this date (3/14) correspond with the first three digits of π (3.14).
This year, our seventh and eighth grade students celebrated a very special Pi Day because the date was 3/14/15 which is the first five digits in the value of π.
Our students gathered information about the history of π and presented it in class. They brought pizza pies, apple pies, raspberry pie, cherry pie, and many other types of pies to commemorate this day. Not only did our students have fun, they learned the value of π and that math can be fun as well!
